Day 1: Take A Walk Back in Time- Colosseum, Roman Forum, Via Imperi, Piazza Venezia, and Walking Tour
Colosseum
Why not start with the most iconic symbol of the Roman Empire this morning??
We did the tour that included the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill and absolutely loved the three-hour tour filled with stories that brought the places we saw to life. Highly recommend this option and definitely book early!
Roman Forum
Be sure to climb Palatine Hill, where the emperors once lived. It is worth the short climb for the panoramic views of the city! A great place for photos and to take it all in!
Via Imperi
To continue your walk through the Roman Empire and the open-air museum walk along the Via Imperi. On both sides, you will see ancient structures. It truly is a magical place taking you back in time.
Lunch
This is a great time for a lunch break and resting your feet for a bit! So many options around you, pick your favorites! Check out our Roman Food Post for more inspiration.
Piazza Venezia
After lunch, we headed to Piazza Venezia just a 5-minute walk over.
This square is easily identified by the grand white marble statue of Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II, a symbol of regality and the first king of unified Italy.
The real hidden surprise is once you reach the terrace to see free panoramic views of Rome’s iconic landmarks. It is history and beauty at the same time!
You can end your evening here and enjoy the culinary scene around here. Or if you are like us and want to keep exploring the marvel that Rome is take a nighttime free walking tour!
Walking Tour
By now you must know that we love to walk and there is really no better way than to take a locally provided walking tour to learn more about the city. Even better if it is a free walking tour! We highly recommend the two-hour Central Rome Free Walking Tour. We found it very informative and enjoyed the leisurely stroll around the city. The tour ended at the Trevi fountain.
Trevi Fountain at Night
Dinner
End the night with a wonderful dinner and wine! There are so many delicious places to eat in Rome it can be overwhelming at times to choose the perfect spot. Our main tip is just to walk a block away from the main tourist sites to minimize tourist traps and find good local food.
Day 2: A Stroll Through Central Rome, Hidden Gems, and Sunset Views
Pro-tip: If you want a glimpse of Rome before the crowds are out, then wake up very early and take a stroll! This mainly applies for the Trevi fountain and Spanish Steps. Don’t worry if you cannot, we have a jam packed day so sleeping in is definitely encouraged.
Piazza Navona

Now we are going to walk to the Pantheon just a few minutes away from Piazza Navona.
Trevi Fountain
This is the symbol of romance and wishes that draw visitors from all over the world to admire its beauty. Enjoy the glimmering water and intricate structures in the daylight. It is said if you toss a coin and you will return to Rome. Did you know that over the course of a year, the fountain makes ~1 million dollars a year that is donated to a local charity.
Piazza di Spagna- Spanish Steps
Piazza del Popolo (People’s Square)
If you are looking to views check ut the Pincio Terrace- great views of Rome! You can also come back at sunset for this.
This also would be a good time in the day for some lunch.

Of course, no evening is complete without Gelato and a passeggiata (an evening walk) through Rome!
Day 3: Step into a New Country- Vatican Day and Castel San’t Angelo
On your final day in Rome, reserve the morning for Vatican City or should we say country? As it is technically the smallest nation in the world!
Vatican City
We feel the best way to see the highlights of Vatican City is with a guided tour. There are so many options, the one we highly recommend is this 3-hour long small group guided tour of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, & St. Peter’s Basilica Guided Tour. We absolutely loved it! They did a great job of showing us the highlights and giving us some time to take everything in. So much to see!!!
St. Peter Square
This is a large and beautiful piazza/square filled with architecture and grandeur. An entry place to the Vatican highlights.
Vatican Gardens
Vatican Museum
Sistine Chapel
This chapel will leave you in awe taking in the breathtaking art covering the walls and ceilings! Painted by the genius of Michelangelo, the vivid colors and details transport you into a serene state.
St. Peter’s Basciliica
St. Peter’s Basilica and Cupola- Dome Climb
The typical ticket range is ten euros with the elevator and climb combo vs eight euros for climb only—so pick your favorite! Of course, check online for the most updated prices. Unfortunately, there is no way to pre-book the basic tickets, so you do have to stay in line to purchase. The benefit is if you took a guided tour earlier, the tour ends at the ticket site giving you an advantage.
Lunch
Great for a lunch break either in Vatican City or back to Rome. For inspiration check out Roman Eats post. You can consider Campo De’ Fiori - Bustling market (make sure to check the daily hours).
Ponte Sant’Angelo
Castel Sant’Angelo
Ponte Umberto I
Dinner
In the evening, embrace the romantic ambiance of Rome with a leisurely stroll along the Tiber River. As the sun sets and casts a golden glow on the city's landmarks, cross the elegant Ponte Sant'Angelo and make your way to the enchanting Trastevere neighborhood.
As your three days in Rome come to an end, you'll realize that there is still so much more to discover in this enchanting city. Rome has a way of captivating your heart and leaving you longing to return. Embrace each moment, immerse yourself in its history and culture, and let the eternal city weave its spell upon you. Rome, with its grandeur and allure, promises a journey that will forever hold a special place in your memories.
Modifications/tips:
We recommend staying centrally in Rome allowing you to walk everywhere.
We also recommend buying a transport pass for 72 hours which can be very cost-effective for unlimited transport use. Of course, you can also find ride shares and taxis in the area too.
Definitely make reservations for dinner ahead of time as dining in Rome is fairly popular and if you are craving the best, you don’t want to miss out!
Eat all the gelato you can!
