Our First Time in Rome: Epic 3 Days

For most people, Italy is a bucket list destination! For us it definitely was. Rome is known for its culture, history, food, and wine! We want to inspire your next getaway to Rome filled with all of this and many wonderful memories.

Day 1: Take A Walk Back in Time- Colosseum, Roman Forum, Via Imperi, Piazza Venezia, and Walking Tour

Colosseum

Why not start with the most iconic symbol of the Roman Empire this morning??

colosseum, rome, epic structures

The Colosseum was thought to have begun construction in 69-74 AD and completed in 80 AD. As we entered we could not help but feel the history surrounding us. It is such an impressive architecture and we feel the best way to bring the gladiator stories and ancient crowds to life is with a guided tour.

We did the tour that included the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill and absolutely loved the three-hour tour filled with stories that brought the places we saw to life. Highly recommend this option and definitely book early!

Roman Forum

This area is a complex of ruins that once served as the heart of ancient Rome. As we strolled, we saw ancient temples, arches, columns, and building blocks so well preserved. We felt transported to a different time.

Be sure to climb Palatine Hill, where the emperors once lived. It is worth the short climb for the panoramic views of the city! A great place for photos and to take it all in!

Via Imperi

To continue your walk through the Roman Empire and the open-air museum walk along the Via Imperi. On both sides, you will see ancient structures. It truly is a magical place taking you back in time.

Lunch

This is a great time for a lunch break and resting your feet for a bit! So many options around you, pick your favorites! Check out our Roman Food Post for more inspiration.

Piazza Venezia

After lunch, we headed to Piazza Venezia just a 5-minute walk over.

This square is easily identified by the grand white marble statue of Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II, a symbol of regality and the first king of unified Italy.

The real hidden surprise is once you reach the terrace to see free panoramic views of Rome’s iconic landmarks. It is history and beauty at the same time!

You can end your evening here and enjoy the culinary scene around here. Or if you are like us and want to keep exploring the marvel that Rome is take a nighttime free walking tour!

Walking Tour

By now you must know that we love to walk and there is really no better way than to take a locally provided walking tour to learn more about the city. Even better if it is a free walking tour! We highly recommend the two-hour Central Rome Free Walking Tour. We found it very informative and enjoyed the leisurely stroll around the city. The tour ended at the Trevi fountain.

Trevi Fountain at Night

The water truly shimmers under the moonlight and the beautiful structures around it are glowing. It is a beautiful sight to see at night! This is just a sneak peak, we will be back tomorrow to explore the fountain.

Don’t forget to toss your coin into the fountain and make a wish.

Dinner

End the night with a wonderful dinner and wine! There are so many delicious places to eat in Rome it can be overwhelming at times to choose the perfect spot. Our main tip is just to walk a block away from the main tourist sites to minimize tourist traps and find good local food.

We highly recommend having dinner at IL Chianti Vineria. We had delicious gourmet pasta with savory wines. Just a short walk from the Trevi Fountain. You should also consider making reservations for prime dinner times ahead of time.

Day 2: A Stroll Through Central Rome, Hidden Gems, and Sunset Views

Pro-tip: If you want a glimpse of Rome before the crowds are out, then wake up very early and take a stroll! This mainly applies for the Trevi fountain and Spanish Steps. Don’t worry if you cannot, we have a jam packed day so sleeping in is definitely encouraged.

Piazza di Spagna- Spanish Steps

Afterwards, make your way to the Spanish Steps, a common meeting place and a hub of activity in the heart of Rome. Climb to the top for some amazing views of the city. Spend some time people-watching, shopping, or chilling at a cafe.

Piazza del Popolo (People’s Square)

We wanted to continue on our journey of discovering Rome’s beautiful piazza/squares. So we walked for 10 minutes to the Piazza del Popolo. It welcomes us with grandeur with Egyptian obelisks, rich history, and architecture.

If you are looking to views check ut the Pincio Terrace- great views of Rome! You can also come back at sunset for this.

This also would be a good time in the day for some lunch.

Day 3:  Step into a New Country- Vatican Day and Castel San’t Angelo

On your final day in Rome, reserve the morning for Vatican City or should we say country? As it is technically the smallest nation in the world!

Vatican City

We feel the best way to see the highlights of Vatican City is with a guided tour. There are so many options, the one we highly recommend is this 3-hour long small group guided tour of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, & St. Peter’s Basilica Guided Tour. We absolutely loved it! They did a great job of showing us the highlights and giving us some time to take everything in. So much to see!!!
