Vegetarian Foods to Try in Prague:

As one vegetarian on this trip, we always try to ensure we have plenty of local vegetarian foods to try! The holidays include a wide variety of yummy desserts which is just an added bonus!

  1. Trdelník
    A sweet pastry dough covered in cinnamon sugar, often topped with soft serve ice cream. We prefer the one without ice cream for the warm oozy feel! (Vegetarian, but not vegan)

  2. Hot Chocolate at Café Slavia
    Rich and creamy hot chocolate served in an iconic café with a long history.

  3. Gingerbread Cookies (Pernik na Figurky)
    Traditional Czech gingerbread cookies, often intricately decorated.

  4. Vanilla Crescents (Vanilkové Rohličky)
    Buttery crescent-shaped cookies with a sweet vanilla flavor.

  5. Black-and-White Cookies (Linecké Těsto Dvoubarevné)
    Festive cookies made from buttery dough, half coated in chocolate or jam.

  6. Christmas Cookies (Vánoční Cukroví)
    A variety of homemade cookies, including vanilkové rohlíčky and linecké.

  7. Vánočka
    A sweet, braided bread often served with almonds during Christmas.

  8. Lángos
    Deep-fried dough served with garlic, cheese, or sometimes tomato sauce.

  9. Chlebíčky
    Open-faced sandwiches with cheese, egg, pickles, and vegetables (can be made vegetarian).

  10. Palacinky
    Thin pancakes, often filled with jam, Nutella, or fruit, and dusted with powdered sugar.

  11. Potato Pancakes (Bramboráky)
    Crispy, savory potato pancakes with garlic, often served with sour cream.

  12. Kulajda
    A creamy mushroom and potato soup with hard-boiled eggs.

  13. Noodle Soup with Liver Meatballs (Polévka s Nudlemi a Játrovými Knedlíčky)
    Can be made vegetarian if you omit the liver meatballs and adjust the stock.

  14. Cabbage Soup (Zelňačka)
    A hearty cabbage soup, can be served with or without sausage.

Many dishes such as dumplings and soups are offered as vegetarian as well especially when dining out! So always be on the lookout and just take a peak at the menu before you decide where to eat!

Non-Vegetarian Meaty Foods to Try in Prague:

Meaty dishes are plentiful here! In a new city, it is always to try their traditional preparation of dishes and try something new!

  1. Prague Ham (Pražská Šunka)
    Tender, flavorful ham often served by weight (100g).

  2. Russian Pelmeni
    Dumplings filled with beef, served with French onion and sour cream.

  3. Fried Cheese (Smažák)
    A crispy, deep-fried cheese served with tartar sauce. (Vegetarian, but can be served with non-veg sides)

  4. Pork Knee (Pečené Koleno)
    Slow-roasted pork knuckle, typically served with mustard, sauerkraut, and bread.

  5. Roast Duck with Cabbage and Dumplings (Kachna se Zelím a Knedlíkem)
    Traditional roasted duck with sauerkraut and bread dumplings.

  6. Beef Tenderloin with Cream Sauce (Svíčková na Smetaně)
    A rich beef dish in creamy sauce, often served with dumplings.

  7. Grilled Sausages (Pražská Klobása)
    Traditional Czech sausages, often grilled and served with mustard.

  8. Pork (Smažený Vepřo)
    Fried pork cutlet, usually served with potatoes and a side of cabbage.

  9. Goulash Soup (Gulášová Polévka)
    A thick meat-based soup made with paprika, spices, and potatoes.

  10. Liver Soup (Polévka s Játrovými Knedlíčky)
    A hearty soup with liver meatballs, noodles, and vegetables.

Drinks to Enjoy:

In addition to your classic drinks, there are some classic Czech drinks that you should definitely try while there!

  1. Eggnog (Vaječný Koňak):
    A creamy festive drink with eggs, sugar, and spirits.

  2. Mulled Wine (Svařák/Svařené Víno):
    Warm spiced wine.

  3. Medovina (Honey Wine):
    Sweet fermented honey drink.

  4. Punch (Vánoční Punč):
    Mulled wine with spirits and fruit juice.

  5. Grog:
    Hot water with rum, sometimes with lemon or tea.

  6. Becherovka:
    Spiced herbal liquor.

  7. Pilsner Urquell:
    Famous Czech lager.
